Climate change is no longer a distant threat for Central Asia 1 it’s already reshaping the region’s water, food, and economic systems. Regional temperatures are rising at almost twice the global average pace, accelerating both desertification and glacier melt. In Tajikistan alone, over 1,000 of its roughly 14,000 glaciers have disappeared entirely, and projections for the wider Tien Shan range suggest the region could lose between 50 and 70 percent of glacier mass by the end of the century under current policy trajectories.
The consequences are already visible. In Kyrgyzstan, glacier coverage has shrunk by 16 percent, and the water level of Lake Issyk-Kul has fallen by nearly 14 meters over recent decades, with the number of rivers feeding it dropping from 100 to 30. Regionally, water withdrawals in some areas now exceed renewable supply, and external water dependency reaches roughly 97 percent in Turkmenistan and about 80 percent in Uzbekistan 1 leaving countries heavily exposed to upstream shifts they can’t control.
Without stronger adaptation measures, experts warn agricultural productivity in parts of the region could fall by up to 30 percent by 2050, and as many as 5.1 million people may face climate-driven displacement tied to water scarcity and declining rural incomes. These pressures fall hardest on countries that contribute little to global emissions 1 Kyrgyzstan, for instance, produces just 0.03 percent of worldwide greenhouse gases, yet is already living with the consequences.
Addressing this will require more than isolated national plans. Regional cooperation on water-sharing, investment in adaptation infrastructure, and coordinated monitoring of glacier and river systems are increasingly seen as prerequisites for economic and food security across the five Central Asian states.
